Building a proper off-road G    April - May   2006

This is a GD240, Series 460 we just bought in order to make it an off-road car. The vehicle is not in very good condition but we are going to replace almost all. The idea is to fit it with 33 12.5 R15 tires. We found them and we are now trying to make as much room as possible for them and new surface will be put on these tires too.

 
As result of higher tires, some lost of torque has to be considered. (about 3 % for every inch of tire). This is going to be balanced by changing the front and rear axles and replacing the 44/9 differential with 37/7 one. (ideal would be 37/6). A new 300 D engine will be fitted to replace the old 240D one. The brake booster and master cylinder will be changed because more power to the brakes is needed as the higher tires are fitted.
The most interesting point is the installation of 4 additional shock absorbers, bringing the total number in 8. This is a interesting intervention and we are now identifying the points of installing them. Help and ideas welcomed by anyone.

The new springs are identified and will replace the old one. (we might lift the cabin up but we are first testing this as do not want to compromise the stability of the car.).

We just got 2 winches. 5.54 T each (12000 lbs). These are heavy duty winches and will be fitted in front and back.
Engine removed from a LWB car. Engine is 300D, enough powerful to pull this car.

Opened this engine and found out that new cylinders, pistons and rings are needed. Bought the spares and fitted them. It is almost now engine now. Fuel pump was ok.

Test Drive

First test drive on 21st of May 2006. Problem accrued. Front shock absorbers support failed.

Reason: Not proper reinforcement.
